Built a “safety net” algorithm and registry in EPIC to catch primary care patients who should be referred for diagnostic colonoscopy due to history of rectal bleeding or iron deficiency anemia in chart (but no subsequent colonoscopy done after this complaint or lab finding)

Results
A test search with the "safety net" algorithm identified 25 patients with rectal bleeding and 26 patients with iron deficiency anemia. 52% and 54% of those with rectal bleeding and iron deficiency anemia either had no prior colonoscopy or were overdue for colonoscopy. 48% and 46% of those with rectal bleeding and iron deficiency anemia had undergone colonoscopy and were not yet due for repeat.
